Many Americans describe teaching in China as a life-changing experience in the most positive way. Much of the impact has to do with encountering a very different and ancient culture in a very intimate way. Many people travel to China, but they will only see the historic sites and the markets. They don’t get a chance to meet and interact with average Chinese people. Teaching is different – it’s up-close and personal. You can become friends with individual Chinese people.
Equally significant is to encounter a culture that has a deep regard for learning and a profound respect for teachers. For many professional educators, it is a deeply moving experience to be treated with such respect, and it brings forth the best in us as teachers. We also know that we are acting as ambassadors for our country and so we try our best to represent American values and spirit.
Here are selections from emails we received from teachers who have participated in YingwenTeach programs. Following that are excerpts from notes and letters given to us by our Chinese students.
