On my last morning in Nanjing, I left my hotel early and went out on the street to find a cab to take me to the airport. The hour was not even 6 AM, and the streets were almost empty. The air was cool and clean. I paused for a moment to listen to a shopkeeper across the street. He was sweeping the sidewalk in front of his store, and he was singing….singing at the top of his voice. The melody was lovely as was his excellent tenor although I have no idea what the lyrics meant.  I have always admired how much the Chinese love music and love to sing.
