About YingwenTeach

YingwenTeach works to provide teaching opportunities for Americans and Canadians in China. We hope that after teaching in China, teachers will return home and inform their students, friends and family members about the wonder that is China and the Chinese people.

Along with our primary mission of “…fostering friendship and understanding between the people of the United States and the People’s Republic of China,” YingwenTeach has a secondary goal to provide well-prepared teachers of English as a Foreign Language/Second Language (EFL/ESL) for Chinese students. In so doing, we hope to improve the level of ESL instruction in China. Teaching English is not the same as speaking English, so we strive to use modern interactive and communicative methods to encourage our Chinese students to improve listening comprehension and speaking ability.

YingwenTeach seeks individuals who have open hearts and who will do their best to prepare excellent, fun and effective classes for their students. We seek teachers who will connect to students and help them increase their confidence when speaking English. To help in these endeavors, YingwenTeach also provides extensive EFL/ ESL resources and information including access to an exclusive knowledge bank called the Red Chamber. Please see the How It Works page for an overview of YingwenTeach services and the FAQs page for a rundown of answers to common questions about our organization and teaching English in China.

The Story of YingwenTeach, or How We Got Here:

On the morning of September 12, 2001, as YingwenTeach founder CJ Shane was preparing to teach her first conversational English class at a large university in Wuhan, China, a teaching assistant arrived and informed her that terrorists had attacked the United States. Teachers and students alike gathered around a small television and watched the awful images coming from home via Hong Kong Phoenix news channel. Naturally, everyone was shocked and dismayed by what they were seeing; the great tragedy of that fateful morning in New York City.

The days to follow were exceptionally difficult. American teachers could not go back home because all U.S. airports had been temporarily closed with no word of when exactly they could return to their loved ones. Despite the considerable distress of the situation, however, all the teachers eventually resumed their responsibilities and went back to teaching English. Shane’s teaching assistant later explained that this decision left a very positive impression with the Chinese students. Americans were viewed as reliable and responsible because they followed through with their commitments even under hardship.

After 9/11 there was a lot of talk about the need for Americans to learn more about other people and other countries. Because of that need, and because our experiences in China have been so positive, YingwenTeach is part of that effort to build bridges and increase knowledge.

YingwenTeach was established by C.J. Shane who is an author, artist, and teacher. YingwenTeach began cooperating with Chinese educational administrators on joint projects in the fall of 2002. YingwenTeach was registered with the Secretary of State, State of Arizona, USA, in 2003, and also has a business license with the city of Tucson, Arizona, USA. YingwenTeach is currently in the process of becoming a non-profit organization.
